SC Slams Rahul Gandhi Over Remarks on Army, Says ‘True Indian Won’t Say Such Things’; Stays Defamation Case
New Delhi, August 4 (TNA) The Supreme Court on Monday came down heavily on Leader of Opposition Rahul Gandhi for his controversial remarks on the Indian Army, questioning his patriotism and sense of responsibility. The top court, however, granted a temporary relief by staying the defamation proceedings against him.
Taking strong exception to Gandhi's statement about the 2022 India-China clash, the bench said, "If you are a true Indian, you wouldn’t make such remarks. How do you know that 2,000 sq km of land was captured by China?"
The court criticised him for using social media to air such claims instead of raising them in Parliament. “You are the Leader of the Opposition. Say it in Parliament, why on social media?” the court asked. The complaint against Gandhi alleged that his comments defamed and demoralised the Indian Army. He had claimed the Chinese were "thrashing" Indian soldiers in Arunachal Pradesh and that the media was ignoring the issue.
“People won’t question China taking land or killing 20 soldiers, but they’ll ask about Bharat Jodo Yatra,” Rahul Gandhi had said earlier. The case continues amid heightened political tensions.
