Uttar Pradesh Emerges as India’s Renewable Energy Hub: Solar and Bio-Energy Lead the Way
Lucknow, August 21 (TNA) On the occasion of Akshay Urja Diwas (Renewable Energy Day) yesterday, Uttar Pradesh’s Energy Minister, A.K. Sharma, announced significant strides made by the state in the renewable energy sector over recent years. Once negligible in renewable energy before 2017, the state has now become a national leader in solar and bio-energy production.
Highlighting the progress on his official X account, Minister Sharma shared key achievements under the PM Surya Ghar scheme:
• In July 2025, Uttar Pradesh topped the list among all states with 27,771 rooftop solar installations, leading monthly and daily installation figures.
• With a current total of 196,327 rooftop solar setups, UP ranks third nationally, following Gujarat and Maharashtra.
• Given the rapid daily installation rate, Uttar Pradesh is poised to soon claim the top spot in total rooftop solar installations.
• UP also leads nationwide in registrations under the PM Surya Ghar scheme.
The minister further underscored UP’s remarkable growth in solar generation capacity, showcasing these milestones:
• 389 MW in 2017
• 2,244 MW in 2022
• 5,157 MW expected in 2025, with an additional 5,000 MW in the pipeline
Alongside solar generation, UP has made pioneering efforts to solarise its urban centres. Notably, Ayodhya has become India’s first solar city, while 16 other cities are advancing on similar sustainable energy initiatives.
In bio-energy, Uttar Pradesh holds the national lead with a daily production of 230 tons of compressed biogas from 25 operational CBG plants, consolidating its position as a green energy powerhouse.
Minister Sharma attributed this transformative progress to the vision of Prime Minister Narendra Modi and the guidance of the Chief Minister of Uttar Pradesh, emphasising that the state is rapidly moving towards becoming India’s foremost energy hub, powered by clean and renewable energy sources.
This concerted push towards renewable energy not only promises sustainable development but also positions Uttar Pradesh as a vital contributor to India’s energy security and green economy ambitions.
