Electricity ‘Powering’ UP’s Growth Engine, State At Number 1 In Rooftop Solar Installations
Lucknow, September 4 (TNA) Power minister of Uttar Pradesh A K Sharma on Thursday said that the energy sector in the state had taken gigantic leaps in the past few years and had contributed immensely to the growth engine of the state.
He underlined that UP has doubled its thermal power capacity in last three years. He also informed on how renewable energy now empowers UP with the state becoming number 1 in daily installation of PM surya Ghar equipments.
Alongwith solar, bio energy is becoming new strength of UP’s energy sector benefitting the farmers and households, he added. “UP is not only number one in the country in supplying peak demand, but it is also number one in implementation of most of national schemes and projects like RDSS as well as Green Corridor projects run by GOI” he stated.
The Minister further said that earlier UP was nowhere in RE sector, whereas in last three years, it has made tremendous progress. In July 2025, in PM Surya Ghar scheme, Uttar Pradesh was leading in the country with 27,771 rooftop solar installations in the country, ranking number 1 for the month among all the States.
With this UP has also emerged as number one state in terms of the speed in daily roof top Solar installations with Lucknow and Varanasi figuring among top ten districts.
UP has made remarkable progress in last few year and while there was only 389 MW solar energy production in 2017 and 2,244 MW in 2022, it is 5,157 MW now in 2025 while projects worth 5000 MW are in pipeline.
Also, with more than two lakh installations, UP stands 3rd in the country, behind only Gujarat and Maharashtra and will soon cross them. On the solar front also the state has done a remarkable work in solarising its cities. Ayodhya has already become the first solar city in the country while other 16 cities are actively moving on that path.
Sharma further informed that UP is also number one in the country in production of compressed biogas with 230 Ton per day production through 25 CBG plants. While per capita electricity consumption of UP was at 489 units in 2017, it increased to 518 units in 2022 and now it is at 630 units.
The minister said he has twin objectives for the energy sector for future: to provide 24x7 uninterrupted quality power to all consumers and secondly to reach at the National average in terms of per capita consumption.
By adoption of technology and bringing professionalism, we have also enhanced our managerial and execution capacity and faults in transformers have reduced, mistakes in billing have come down. Consumers can make their own bills, the minister pointed out. He said, in recent time, electricity generation has increased, supply has increased, and the infrastructure to deliver it everywhere has also been strengthened.
Sharma said that in total Solar generation capacity addition also, UP has made remarkable progress in last few year and while there was only 389 MW solar energy production in 2017 and 2,244 MW in 2022, it is 5,157 MW now in 2025 while projects worth 5000 MW are in pipeline. Sharma said that with the blessings of PM Modi and under guidance of chief minister Yogi Adityanath, UP is fast moving towards becoming an energy hub of the country enriched by green and renewable energy.
