DC ‘Targeted Shooting’ Leaves Two West Virginia Guardsmen Critically Wounded Near White House
Washington, DC, November 27 (TNA) Two members of the West Virginia National Guard are in critical condition after being shot in what Washington, DC, Mayor Muriel Bowser called a “targeted shooting” just blocks from the White House on Wednesday afternoon.
The Guardsmen were on duty in downtown Washington when a gunman opened fire in an apparent ambush-style attack, striking both service members before being subdued by law enforcement. Emergency crews rushed the wounded Guardsmen to area hospitals, where they remain in critical condition under intensive medical care.
Officials said the attack unfolded in a busy commercial area, heightening fears among residents and workers as multiple shots rang out in quick succession. A suspect was taken into custody shortly after the incident, and authorities have recovered a firearm believed to have been used in the shooting. Investigators from local and federal agencies are now working to determine a motive, including whether the Guardsmen were targeted because of their military role.
Mayor Bowser condemned the attack, describing it as a deliberate act of violence against uniformed personnel and vowing that the city would fully support the victims and their families.
Pentagon and West Virginia state officials said they were monitoring the situation closely and coordinating with DC authorities, while calling the Guardsmen “brave public servants” who were carrying out their duties when they were attacked. The shooting has intensified debate over security for deployed Guard units in the nation’s capital, and officials have urged the public to remain calm but vigilant as the investigation continues.
