Women In UP Set To Reap Huge Benefit Out Of Women's Reservation Bill

Lucknow, Sep 19 (TNA) After being okayed by the union cabinet, the Women's Reservation Bill - Nari Shakti Vandan Adhiniyam, was introduced in the parliament on Tuesday. If it clears the decks in the Lok Sabha, huge benefits are on its way for women in Uttar Pradesh, the largest and politically most significant state in India.

As per the 33% reservation for women, there would be 26 Lok Sabha seats and 132 Assembly seats here that will be reserved for women. At present, out of 403 members of the UP Assembly, 48 are women. That is, their participation in the lower house is only 12 percent, which is very low in proportion to their population.

Their participation in the Upper House i.e. Legislative Council is only 6 percent. There are a total of 80 Lok Sabha seats in UP, out of which only 11 MPs are women. In this way, their representation in Lok Sabha seats from UP is less than the country's average of 15 percent. Only 14 percent of the total Lok Sabha seats in UP are held by women.

Sonia Gandhi, Hema Malini, Smriti Irani, Anupriya Patel, Dimple Yadav are few prominent women Lok Sabha MP’s from Uttar Pradesh in the present Lok Sabha.
