UP Powers Ahead: Massive Strides in Green Energy, Power Supply Under the BJP Government
Lucknow, August 15 (TNA) The Uttar Pradesh government has reiterated its unwavering commitment to advancing green energy initiatives while substantially increasing power production capacity across the state, heralding a new era of energy self-reliance and reliability.
Urban Development and Energy Minister A.K. Sharma, addressing the monsoon session of the Legislative Assembly and Council, asserted that for the first time in India’s history, the country has achieved self-sufficiency in the energy sector under the visionary guidance of Prime Minister Narendra Modi.
From Drought to 24/7 Power Supply: A Dramatic Turnaround
Minister Sharma highlighted how the state’s electricity department has responded efficiently during natural calamities like droughts and floods, maintaining record-high levels of power supply for three consecutive years. Contrasting today’s scenario with pre-2017 conditions, he noted, “Earlier, prolonged power cuts were routine and went unreported because electricity itself was rare in most towns and villages. Today, even a brief outage draws attention — a testament to the public’s heightened expectations and the government’s improved standards.”
Vision 2047: Setting Ambitious Energy Goals
During a marathon 24-hour discussion on Vision-2047, the Chief Minister and Deputy Chief Ministers lauded the energy department’s rapid progress. Uttar Pradesh now boasts:
• An average peak demand jumped from 13,000 MW (2012–17) to 30,000 MW in recent years — more than doubling consumer reach.
• The highest electricity supply levels nationwide for three years running.
• Massive rural electrification: 1.5 lakh villages electrified since 2017, compared to 1.28 lakh since independence.
• Modernisation of distribution: Nearly 1.6 lakh km of old wiring and 29 lakh damaged poles were replaced in just three years.
The government’s “double-engine” model — partnership between the Centre and state — is now focused on building “the New UP for a New India.” With transparent governance and technical excellence, Uttar Pradesh is poised to set benchmarks in both power production and clean energy, promising residents a brighter, more sustainable future.
Empowering Farmers and Promoting Clean Energy
The government has prioritised farmers, providing five lakh new tube well connections in eight years — a feat that earlier regimes achieved in seven decades — and waiving bills for many. There is also a determined push toward making farmers partners in solar and biogas initiatives, aiming for more sustainable rural incomes.
National Leadership in Key Energy Schemes
Uttar Pradesh now ranks first nationally in the Revamped Distribution Sector Scheme (RDSS), Green Energy Corridor implementation, and Compressed Bio-Gas (CBG) projects, signalling its emergence as a leader in India’s renewable energy transition.
Infrastructure and Consumer Commitment
With round-the-clock power now reaching homes, farms, and businesses, Sharma emphasised the ongoing upgrades in substation capacities and town-rural feeder separation for better load management. “Our benchmark is global. We treat consumers as paramount — their convenience is our priority,” he affirmed.
A Rebuttal to the Opposition
The Minister also aimed at the opposition, accusing them of spreading misinformation and recalling that the push for privatisation began under their leadership in the 1990s. “Today’s high expectations and expanding access stand in stark contrast to an era when electricity was a luxury, not a norm,” he said.
Steadfast on the Path to a Green, Empowered Uttar Pradesh
The government’s “double-engine” model — partnership between the Centre and state — is now focused on building “the New UP for a New India.” With transparent governance and technical excellence, Uttar Pradesh is poised to set benchmarks in both power production and clean energy, promising residents a brighter, more sustainable future.
