PIL Seeking Ban On Telecast Of "Why I Killed Gandhi" Filed In Allahabad High Court

Prayagraj, February 22 (TNA) A public interest litigation (PIL) has been filed before the Allahabad High Court (HC) seeking a ban on broardcast of short film “Why I killed Gandhi”. The petition has been filed by Rehan Alam Khan and Himanshu Gupta.

The petition said that the film released on the OTT platform Limelight on January 30, the death anniversary of Mahatma Gandhi, is maligning the image of the Father of the Nation.

The PIL contends that the screening of the film in the midst of assembly elections could disturb the communal harmony of Uttar Pradesh.

The petition also raised questions on the dialogues of the film and termed them as highly objectionable and serious in nature. It has been said that the communication material is misleading.

The Supreme Court had refused to entertain the petition filed before it on January 31 and a division bench of Justice Indira Banerjee and Justice JK Maheshwari had directed the petitioner to approach the High Court.

The apex court had also said that a petition can be filed here only if there is a violation of fundamental rights. It is not a case of violation of fundamental rights. The petitioner can approach the High Court under Article 226.
