Pune, January 27 (TNA) In a concerning health development, over 100 cases of Guillain-Barré Syndrome (GBS) have been reported in Pune, Maharashtra, within a week. Among the affected, 16 patients are on ventilator support. Additionally, a suspected death due to GBS has been reported from Solapur. According to reports, the deceased is believed to have contracted the infection in Pune before travelling to Solapur. However, an official confirmation on this matter is still awaited.
This alarming situation has raised questions about the nature of Guillain-Barré Syndrome, its severity, symptoms, and preventive measures.
What Is Guillain-Barré Syndrome?
The human nervous system is divided into two parts: the central nervous system, which includes the brain and spinal cord, and the peripheral nervous system, which comprises the network of nerves connecting the rest of the body. GBS occurs when the immune system mistakenly attacks the peripheral nervous system, leading to potential paralysis or life-threatening complications.
Why Is GBS Dangerous?
GBS can cause muscle weakness, numbness, and even complete paralysis in severe cases. Early symptoms include tingling sensations and muscle weakness that can progress rapidly. Without timely medical intervention, respiratory failure and severe complications can arise.
Preventive Measures and Awareness
While the exact cause of GBS remains unclear, it is often triggered by infections, including viral and bacterial illnesses. Maintaining hygiene, avoiding exposure to infections, and seeking prompt medical attention for any unusual symptoms are key steps in prevention.
As the situation unfolds, health authorities in Maharashtra are closely monitoring developments and urging people to remain vigilant.
