UP’s Crime Drop Shines: NCRB Report Highlights 64% Kidnapping Plunge, Anti-Romeo Success
New Delhi/Lucknow, May 8 (TNA) The latest report from the National Crime Records Bureau (NCRB) has bolstered the reputation of the Uttar Pradesh police and prosecution system. During 2024, the state recorded a significant decline in serious crimes such as offenses against women, dacoity, robbery, and theft, with comparative data over three years painting a picture of solid improvements in law and order.
According to the report, kidnapping cases have seen a sharp drop: while 14,272 such cases were registered in 2023, the number fell to just 5,306 in 2024—a remarkable 62.8% decline, or 64.4% compared to the base year 2022. Rape cases also continued to decrease, from 3,516 registered in 2023 to 3,209 in 2024, while murders of women fell by 4.8%, from 702 to 668.
Cases assaulting women’s dignity and eve-teasing have plummeted unexpectedly, dropping from 9,453 in 2023 to 4,418 in 2024, clearly reflecting the positive impact of the state government’s ‘Anti-Romeo Squad’ campaign.
Eve-teasing cases specifically rose from 2,175 in 2023 to 4,418 in 2024, thanks to intensified checks, strict action, improved police reporting, and growing awareness among victims. However, domestic violence cases saw a slight increase, with 21,266 registered in 2024.
