Sports Ministry Lifts Suspension On WFI, Paving Way For Wrestling Events
New Delhi, March 11 (TNA) The Ministry of Sports has lifted the suspension on the Wrestling Federation of India (WFI), ending months of uncertainty in Indian wrestling. This decision clears the way for various competitions, including selection trials for the upcoming Asian Championship in Amman. The ministry had suspended WFI on December 24, 2023, citing operational irregularities, just three days after a new administration was formed on December 21.
With this decision, Sanjay Singh, a close associate of former WFI president Brij Bhushan Sharan Singh, has regained influence over the federation. Singh's administration had earlier announced Under-15 and Under-20 national championships in Nandini Nagar, Gonda—Brij Bhushan’s stronghold. This move angered the government, as the former BJP MP faces allegations of sexual harassment.
In its official statement, the ministry acknowledged that WFI had taken corrective measures. Considering the broader interests of the sport and its athletes, the government decided to revoke the suspension, allowing wrestling activities to resume without administrative roadblocks.
