Remembering Pingali Venkayya: The Man Behind India’s National Flag
New Delhi, August 2 (TNA) Today, we remember Pingali Venkayya (2 August 1878 – 4 July 1963), a freedom fighter, educationist, and brilliant mind who designed the Indian National Flag. Born in Machilipatnam, Andhra Pradesh, Venkayya was a polymath, fluent in multiple languages and deeply involved in agricultural research and the nationalist movement.
A passionate Gandhian, he presented the first version of the flag to Mahatma Gandhi in 1921, which later evolved into the tricolour we proudly hoist today. His contribution symbolised not just India’s unity in diversity but also the spirit of sacrifice, peace, and progress.
Though he lived a simple life and died in relative obscurity, today he is celebrated as the flagman of India, whose legacy flies high with every flutter of the national flag. Salute to Pingali Venkayya — The visionary behind India’s Tiranga.
