Regulatory Triumph: SC Panel Clears Vantara, Praises Animal Welfare Standards
New Delhi, September 15 (TNA) The Supreme Court-appointed Special Investigation Team (SIT) has officially given a clean chit to Gujarat’s Vantara Zoological Rescue and Rehabilitation Centre at Jamnagar, following a detailed probe into allegations of illegal animal acquisition and non-compliance with wildlife protection laws.
The SIT—a four-member panel led by former Supreme Court judge Justice Jasti Chelameswar—found Vantara to be in strict regulatory and legal compliance, confirming no wrongdoing in the acquisition and care of animals, including elephants and endangered species.
The probe was initiated after PILs and NGO complaints alleged that Vantara had unlawfully acquired temple elephants and other wildlife from India and abroad. The SIT’s report, submitted in a sealed cover, dismissed these claims as “unsubstantiated,” and the Supreme Court bench, led by Justices Pankaj Mithal and PB Varale, cautioned against attempts to tarnish Vantara’s image, praising its operational standards and animal welfare.
The apex court noted that Vantara’s practices are above reproach and its facilities—including scientifically designed elephant enclosures and rehabilitation amenities—set benchmarks for animal care in India. Authorities are expected to implement any further recommendations from the SIT, with the court set to pass a detailed order soon.
