New Delhi, Nov 19 (TNA) In a swift move, which took many in the country by suprise, prime minister Narendra Modi on Friday announced the repealing of the three controversial farm laws, which had triggered a wave of protests by farmers across India.

The announcement coincided with the Guru Purab festival, when Sikhism founder Guru Nanak's birthday is celebrated and is being seen in political circles as a decision taken keeping in mind the forthcoming state assembly elections of five key states, including Uttar Pradesh and Punjab.

"Maybe something was lacking in our tapasya, which is why we could not convince some farmers about the laws. But today is Prakash Parv, not the time to blame anyone. Today, I want to tell the country that we have decided to repeal the three farm laws," PM Modi said in an address to the nation.
