Mumbai Drenched: Overnight Deluge Paralyses City, Causes Widespread Flooding
Mumbai, August 17 (TNA) The city woke up to chaos this morning after being battered by a hefty downpour overnight, plunging large parts of the city into a waterlogged state of disarray. According to the India Meteorological Department, several suburbs received over 200mm of rainfall within just a few hours—from late Friday night until the early hours of Saturday—making it the wettest August day since 2020 at the Santacruz station, which recorded 245mm.
The relentless rain caused severe flooding in low-lying pockets of Vikhroli, Ghatkopar, Bhandup, Andheri, Chembur, Malad, Goregaon, and Kings Circle. Streets, railway tracks at Sion and Bandra, and major subways, including Andheri and Milan, became impassable. Commuters faced heavy disruptions, with local train services affected and traffic brought to a near standstill in some areas. Social media was awash with visuals of vehicles submerged and residents wading through knee-deep water in poor visibility.
Tragically, a landslide struck Jankalyan Society in Vikhroli (West), killing two and injuring two more, according to municipal officials. Emergency workers have been deployed across affected areas, clearing drains and providing assistance. The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation has urged residents to avoid non-essential travel and remain vigilant as a red alert remains in effect for Mumbai, predicting continued heavy to very heavy rains throughout the day.
Weather authorities warn of more rainfall in the coming days, with an orange alert set to continue until Tuesday. As the city recovers from overnight flooding, authorities are on high alert and monitoring flood-prone zones, advising people to stay indoors and help keep vital routes clear for emergency vehicles.
