Mayawati Slams Govt On Soaring Prices Of Essential Commodities And Fuel

Lucknow, July 11 (TNA) Bahujan Samaj Party (BSP) supremo Mayawati on Sunday expressed "worry and dismay" and the hike in prices of essential commodities. The former chief minister of Uttar Pradesh, in a series of tweets said that it was painful to see prices of petrol, diesel, LPG cylinders and milk shoot through the roof.

"These essential commodities have disrupted the household budget of people, specially the poor and the middle class across the country," she said while accusing the government of being "insensitive and not serious" in containing the prices.

She has served four separate terms as Chief Minister of Uttar Pradesh. She is the national president of the Bahujan Samaj Party (BSP). She served as the chief minister briefly in 1995 and again in 1997, then from 2002 to 2003 and from 2007 to 2012.

The Dalit leader went on the suggest to the government at the centre and in states to work towards controlling the soaring prices. "The governments should put in all their power and resources to give relief to the people" she said.

The four-time UP chief minister also stated that immediate intervention of the state to pull the country out of despondency and bring the development process back.

Mayawati has been maintaining a studied silence on political matters and is away from public glare for some time now, but has suddenly become vocal. Once a strong critic of the ruling Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), she was viewed as going soft on the saffron camp of late and opposition parties have been accusing her for being in a covert understanding with the BJP.
