Maharashtra Rains Fury: Red Alert in Mumbai, Pune Chokes, Koyna Dam Discharge Raises Alarm
Mumbai, August 19 (TNA) Mumbai witnessed chaos as torrential rains of nearly 500mm over 84 hours disrupted normal life, leaving two people dead and prompting the IMD to issue the season’s first red alert for August 18–19. One person died in a wall collapse at Napean Sea Road, while another was electrocuted in Kanjurmarg.
BMC and civic bodies in Navi Mumbai, Thane, Palghar, and Mira Bhayander declared holidays for schools and colleges, while Mumbai University postponed 32 exams to August 23. Roads in Chembur and Dadar were submerged, a man went missing in the Mithi River, and another was injured in a tree fall.
Pune reeled under a 12-hour downpour that triggered traffic chaos with kilometre-long jams on Nagar Road, Sinhgad Road, Wagholi, Hadapsar, and Laxmi Road. Police Commissioner Amitesh Kumar urged citizens to avoid stepping out unless necessary and to dial helpline 112 in emergencies.
Meanwhile, in Satara district, heavy discharge from Koyna Dam led authorities to alert residents along the Koyna and Krishna rivers, warning of sudden water level rise.
