Heavy Rains Lash Northern Tamil Nadu: Chennai, Cuddalore On Red Alert
Chennai, October 22 (TNA) The state capital and much of northern Tamil Nadu are facing persistent heavy rainfall on Wednesday, due to an active system in the Bay of Bengal. The Regional Meteorological Centre has placed several districts—including Chennai, Cuddalore, Chengalpattu, and Mayiladuthurai—on red or orange alerts for hefty rain.
In the 24 hours preceding this morning, Chennai’s Nungambakkam station recorded over 60mm of rain, with ongoing downpours causing local waterlogging and raising concerns about potential urban flooding.
Schools across many districts remain closed for safety, and flood preparedness measures are in effect, with Chief Minister M.K. Stalin directing relief and emergency services to stay on high alert.
Residents are advised to avoid non-essential travel, carry umbrellas and rain gear if venturing out, and heed warnings, especially due to poor air and water quality resulting from the weather.
Weather officials caution that intermittent moderate to heavy showers, strong winds, and possible thunderstorms will continue through at least tomorrow as the system influences the region. Schools in many districts have been closed for today.
