Devastating Cloudburst in Uttarkashi Claims Lives, Triggers Massive Flash Floods and Landslides
Dehradun, August 5 (TNA) A devastating cloudburst struck the high-altitude village of Dharali in Uttarkashi district, Uttarakhand, on Tuesday, causing flash floods and a massive mudslide that damaged or swept away several houses, hotels, and homestays.
At least four people have been confirmed dead, and around 10–12 labourers are feared buried under the debris. Rescue operations are underway involving the State Disaster Response Force (SDRF), National Disaster Response Force (NDRF), and the Indian Army’s Ibex Brigade.
The Uttarakhand Chief Minister, Pushkar Singh Dhami, expressed deep sorrow and assured that relief efforts continue with the situation being closely monitored. Union Home Minister Amit Shah and Prime Minister Narendra Modi have also extended their support and condolences, with teams dispatched to assist in rescue efforts.
What is a cloud burst?
A cloudburst is an intense and sudden rainfall event characterised by exceptionally heavy precipitation typically over a very small area in a short period, often less than an hour. These events usually occur in mountainous or hilly terrains, where moisture-laden winds are forced upward by terrain, leading to rapid condensation and the release of tremendous volumes of rainwater.
Because of this localised deluge, cloudbursts frequently trigger flash floods and landslides, inflicting significant damage and loss of life in vulnerable regions.
India has witnessed several major cloudburst incidents over recent years, notably in the Himalayan regions. In July 2023, a cloudburst in Ghansali, Uttarakhand, caused flash floods and stranded hundreds of pilgrims during the Kedarnath Yatra. In August 2022, multiple cloudbursts struck Himachal Pradesh and Uttarakhand, causing fatalities and destruction.
The Pahalgam route of the Amarnath Yatra in Jammu and Kashmir also saw a sudden cloudburst in July 2022, which led to disruption and loss of lives. Earlier incidents in 2021 included deadly cloudbursts in Kishtwar, Jammu and Kashmir, leading to the death of over 20 people and heavy damage in the region.
