Congress Leads No-Confidence Motion Against Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla
New Delhi, Feb 10 (TNA) Congress, spearheading an opposition push, submitted a formal no-confidence notice against Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla to the House Secretary General on Tuesday, amid escalating tensions in the Budget Session.
Backed by around 120 MPs from Congress, RJD, SP, and DMK, led by K Suresh and Gaurav Gogoi, the motion under Article 94(c) accuses Birla of “blatantly partisan” conduct, denying Leader of Opposition Rahul Gandhi speech time on the President’s Address Motion of Thanks and suspending eight MPs. TMC stayed away from signing.
The dramatic step follows days of House logjams, failed Speaker talks, and opposition ire over alleged BJP favouritism, like allowing Nishikant Dubey’s remarks while muting critics. Requiring 14 days’ notice, it mandates a Lok Sabha vote for Birla’s removal, intensifying pre-poll showdowns
