Air India’s Big Move: Pilots to Soar High Till 65!
Lucknow, August 19 (TNA) Air India has announced a significant decision to increase the retirement age for its pilots by 7 years, extending it from the previous age of 58 to 65 years. This move was communicated by Air India’s CEO and MD Campbell Wilson in a recent town hall meeting as part of the airline’s efforts to align its policies with those of the erstwhile Vistara, which was merged with Air India in November 2024. Alongside pilots, the retirement age for non-flying staff has also been raised from 58 to 60 years.
The decision addresses a longstanding disparity between the retirement ages of Air India and Vistara pilots, which had caused discontent among Air India’s pilot community. Under current Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA) regulations, pilots are allowed to serve commercially up to the age of 65, and the airline’s updated policy now formally aligns with this limit.
In summary, Air India pilots can now fly until the age of 65, seven years beyond the previous retirement age, with non-flying staff retiring at 60 years, thus harmonising workforce policies post the Vistara merger and supporting the airline’s strategic expansion.
Importantly, the change is also linked to Air India’s expansion plans. The airline is aiming to grow its fleet substantially, necessitating the retention of experienced pilots. To meet workforce requirements, Air India will now retain certain trained pilots post-retirement on contractual terms for up to five years, with the possibility of extension until they reach 65. A committee will review retiring pilots’ eligibility annually, based on discipline, flight safety, and performance, to recommend contract extensions.
This policy shift not only brings the retirement ages in line between merged entities but also aims to stabilise and retain skilled personnel amid a backdrop of some recent resignations and integration challenges. The increase in superannuation age for pilots will allow them to serve longer, directly supporting Air India’s operational and growth ambitions.
