Renowned Urdu poet and Padma Shri awardee Dr Bashir Badr passed away on Thursday in Bhopal at the age of 91. He had been battling prolonged illness and dementia for an extended period. His contributions to Urdu literature and the ghazal are monumental.

Born in Ayodhya, Uttar Pradesh, in 1935, he earned his PhD from Aligarh Muslim University (AMU), where he also taught as a professor. He published multiple highly acclaimed ghazal collections and was awarded the Padma Shri for his outstanding contribution to literature.

Following the 1987 Meerut riots, where his home and many unpublished works were tragically burnt, he relocated to Bhopal, which became his home for the rest of his life. His beautiful, accessible, and deeply emotional couplets, such as "Log toot jaate hain ek ghar banane mein," remain iconic in the literary and film spheres.
