Spain Train Collision: Death Toll Rises to 39 as Rescue Efforts Continue
Córdoba, Spain, January 19 (TNA) A catastrophic collision between two high-speed trains in southern Spain on Sunday evening has claimed at least 39 lives, with dozens more injured. The incident occurred near Adamuz when the rear carriages of a Málaga-Madrid train derailed and collided head-on with an oncoming train from the opposite direction.
Transport Minister Óscar Puente described the crash as “unusual,” noting it happened on a straight track recently repaired. The first train, operated by private company Iryo with around 300 passengers, saw its derailed section smash into Renfe’s service; the impact was so severe that two front carriages of the second train plunged 4 meters down an embankment.
Andalusia’s president Juanma Moreno confirmed over 75 injured treated in Córdoba hospitals. Rescue operations involving firefighters and Red Cross teams continued overnight into Monday, with a support center established in Adamuz; investigations into the cause may take up to a month.
