In response to the question posed by the deputy of the Basque party EH BILDU, Jon Inarritu, in Congress on the official position of the Spanish government regarding the Sahara issue, the Spanish executive has underlined that Spain's position is fully in line with international legality as stated by the Head of Government at the UN General Assembly in September 2023 which was based on the provisions of point 1 of the Joint Declaration of April 2022 and point 8 of the Joint Declaration of February 2023 which state that "Spain recognises the importance of the Sahara issue for Morocco as well as Morocco's serious and credible efforts within the framework of the United Nations to find a mutually acceptable solution.

In this respect, Spain considers the Moroccan autonomy initiative, presented in 2007, as the most serious, realistic and credible basis for resolving this dispute." It further stated that Spain is in favour of a mutually acceptable solution within the framework of the United Nations Charter and the Security Council resolutions.

Spain unconditionally supports the efforts of the UN Secretary General's Personal Envoy for the Sahara and it will always support the Saharawi population in the Tindouf camps and will always remain the leading donor of humanitarian aid at the European and international level with a strong presence and interaction with the Saharawi authorities in charge of cooperation.

The Spanish government's response to the Sahara question has provoked anger and indignation among the Polisario separatists and their Spanish supporters.
