Morocco Launches Broad Consultation on Sahara Autonomy Plan After UN Backing
Rabat, November 11 (TNA) By order of King Mohammed VI, a high-level meeting was convened at the Royal Office on Monday to update and detail the Moroccan autonomy initiative for the Sahara region, following the recent adoption of United Nations Security Council Resolution 2797.
The meeting, chaired by senior royal advisors and attended by leaders of national political parties, as well as the Ministers of Interior and Foreign Affairs, underscored the King’s mandate for a participatory and consultative approach.
During the session, the King’s advisors invited party leaders to contribute their organisations’ visions and concrete proposals for refining the autonomy offer. This comes in the wake of the King’s October 31 speech and signals Morocco’s intent to further involve political, institutional, and civil society actors in shaping the future of the Sahara region within Moroccan sovereignty.
Political party heads welcomed the initiative, expressing collective pride in the country’s direction and a unified commitment to national unity. They highlighted the Royal Decision’s significance in supporting the voluntary return of citizens from the Tindouf camps, fostering local governance, and achieving a final, peaceful resolution to the regional conflict.
Stakeholders affirmed their readiness to promptly submit detailed memoranda in full support of the King’s tireless efforts to consolidate Morocco’s legitimate sovereign rights.
This historic meeting reflects the enhanced international recognition of the autonomy plan as a realistic and viable solution—recently endorsed in Security Council Resolution 2797—which is seen as a pathway to lasting stability, territorial integrity, and peace in the region.
