Ghana’s Defence, Environment Ministers Killed in Helicopter Crash en Route to Anti-Mining Mission
New Delhi, August 6 (TNA) Ghana is mourning the loss of two senior ministers after a tragic helicopter crash claimed the lives of Defence Minister Edward Omane Boamah and Environment Minister Ibrahim Murtala Muhammed. The incident occurred on Wednesday, when the military helicopter carrying five passengers and three crew members lost contact with air traffic control.
Television station Joy News aired distressing cell phone footage of the smouldering wreckage in a heavily forested region. Authorities later confirmed that all eight individuals on board were killed.
The ministers were reportedly en route to a government-backed event addressing illegal mining — a pressing environmental and economic issue in Ghana. Boamah had assumed office earlier this year following President John Mahama’s inauguration in January, while Muhammed served as Minister for Environment, Science, and Technology.
President Mahama’s Chief of Staff, Julius Debrah, extended heartfelt condolences, stating, “The president and government extend our sympathies to the families of our comrades and the brave servicemen who died in service to the country.”
The tragedy has sent shockwaves through the nation, prompting calls for a thorough investigation into the cause of the crash.
