Dutch Foreign Minister Delivers Resounding Endorsement Of Morocco's Regional Leadership
Rabat, April 8 (TNA) Dutch Foreign Minister Tom Berendsen delivered a resounding endorsement of Morocco’s regional leadership on Tuesday, hailing the Kingdom as a "trustworthy partner" and a cornerstone of global stability under the guidance of King Mohammed VI.
Speaking at a press briefing following high-level talks with Moroccan Foreign Minister Nasser Bourita, Berendsen’s visit was marked by a definitive shift in Dutch policy regarding the Sahara. The Netherlands now officially recognises Morocco’s autonomy plan as the "most feasible solution" to the long-standing dispute.
"The Netherlands considers that genuine autonomy under Moroccan sovereignty is the way forward," Berendsen stated, adding that the Dutch government intends to align its future diplomatic and economic actions with this position. He further reiterated support for UN Security Council Resolution 2797 and the mediation efforts of UN Envoy Staffan de Mistura.
Beyond regional territorial matters, the Dutch top diplomat emphasised Morocco’s unique position as a bridge between Europe and Africa. He characterised the Kingdom as a strategic leader with vital ties across the Sahel, West Africa, and the Gulf, specifically praising Rabat’s active role in fostering development in the volatile Sahel region.
The discussions also touched on the Middle East, with Berendsen expressing high regard for the King’s personal commitment to the Palestinian cause in his role as Chairman of the Al-Quds Committee. Both nations reaffirmed their dedication to a two-state solution, building on recent cooperation within the Global Alliance.
On the economic front, Berendsen pointed to Morocco’s "cutting-edge infrastructure" and rapid modernisation as a major draw for international investment. The visit, concluded with a Joint Communiqué, signals a significant strengthening of the Rabat-Hague axis, positioning the two nations as key allies in an increasingly complex geopolitical landscape.
