Deepika Padukone At Centre Of Controversy Over Ad Promoting Abu Dhabi Tourism

1 min read

Mumbai, October 10 (TNA) Bollywood star Deepika Padukone is at the centre of a recent controversy over an advertisement promoting Abu Dhabi tourism. In the ad, Deepika is seen wearing an abaya, a traditional garment, while visiting the Sheikh Zayed Grand Mosque.

This appearance sparked backlash on social media, with some critics mistakenly referring to it as a hijab and accusing her of hypocrisy. Critics compared this to her 2015 “My Choice” campaign, where she advocated for women’s freedom to dress and live on their own terms.

Supporters, however, argue that Deepika’s choice to wear the abaya was a mark of respect towards the local culture and customs, as she adhered to the dress code required at the mosque. They emphasised that the abaya is a symbol of cultural respect in the context of the ad, not a political or religious statement.

The controversy has raised debates about cultural sensitivity, women’s freedom, and double standards in social media reactions. Deepika, known for her influential role in Bollywood and her advocacy for mental health, has not commented directly on the controversy.

Many believe this backlash reflects broader societal double standards rather than a genuine criticism of her personal choices. The ad also features her husband, actor Ranveer Singh, who is the tourism ambassador for Abu Dhabi, making the campaign a joint effort to promote the city’s culture and tourism
