Amid Spike In Covid Cases Again, French President Likely To Announce New Restrictions

Paris, July 12 (TNA) French president Emmanuel Macron is expected to announce a bevy of new restrictions across the country as cases of Coronavirus are one again rising.

This will come as a jolt to most countrymen as it was only a few days back that after almost 16 months of heavy restrictions and lockdowns, night clubs in France had reopened, in a bid to get back to post-covid normalcy.

Media reports suggest that the French president will address the nation on television and brief them on the possibility of a new wave of coronavirus fuelled by the more contagious Delta variant. Macron chaired a health defence council on Monday morning to deliberate on the issue.

The virus strain, which was first detected in India, now accounts for the majority of new infections in the country, according to health authorities quoted by French media.

Another report suggests that while hospitalisations have ebbed, new infections are soaring. On Sunday, France reported 4,256 new cases compared to 2,549 just a week ago.
