Varanasi Labour Rights Champion Sandeep Ghatak Succumbs To COVID-19

VARANASI || Sandeep Ghatak, joint secretary of the Varanasi district committee of the Centre of Indian Trade Unions (CITU) died aged 52 at a Varanasi hospital this week. He had earlier tested positive for COVID-19.

He was, from his youth, active in the Communist Party of India-Marxist and served as a functionary of the Students’ Federation of India while still a student at Benaras Hindu University. He worked for a while as a medical representative. He served as a reporter at Varanasi for ‘Ganashakti,’ the party’s daily newspaper brought out in West Bengal.

He was active in social work, and would organize blood donation camps and take charge of flood relief among migrant workers. He was also deeply involved with the problems of workers in the industrial area.

He is survived by his wife, who works as a medical representative, and a daughter. In accordance with his wishes, his family donated the body for medical research.
