SP Lok Sabha MP From Sambhal, Shafeequr Rehman Barq Passes Away At 94

Lucknow, February 27 (TNA) Lok Sabha MP from Sambhal, Shafeequr Rahman Barq breath his last on Tuesday. The veteran Samajwadi Party (SP) lawmaker was 94 and had been ailing for some time now. He had been recently admitted to a medical facility after he complained of weakness after a bout of loose motions.

He was born on July 11, 1930 and had started his political career under Chaudhary Charan Singh and later joined ranks with late Mulayam Singh Yadav. A vocal critic of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) he was also the convenor of the Babri Maszid Action Committee. He was the founder member of Samajwadi Party.

He was sent to Lok Sabha five times. While he won on a SP ticket from Moradabad in 1996, 1998 and 2004 and represented Sambhal on a BSP ticket in 2009 after which he switched sides and won on a SP ticket in 2019. He lost the Moradabad seat in 1999 and the 2014 polls from Sambhal with a very narrow margin. SP chief Akhilesh Yadav has mourned his demise.
