Massive Fire In Kanpur Readymade Cloth Market In Basmandi, More Than 600 Shops Gutted

Kanpur, March 31 (TNA) More than 600 shops located in the readymade market at Basmandi here were gutted in a massive inferno that broke out in the wee hours of Friday morning. The entire wholesale market has been destroyed and the fire is still raging. Fire tenders of the UP Police have failed to douse the fire after struggling for hours and now the army has taken charge, an official said.

A hydraulic machine has also been brought from Lucknow to fire fight. The fire broke out at around 2 am in the readymade market of clothes in Bansmandi, Anwarganj and engulfed more than 500 shops, including the readymade market in Hamraj Complex, AR Tower.

Chief Fire Officer Deepak Sharma along with Anwarganj police and about six vehicles from Latush road, Mirpur, Fazalganj and Jajmau fire stations reached the spot and initially attempted to extinguish the fire. Police Commissioner BP Jogdand also reached the spot when informed.

The CFO informed that prima facie it has come to light that the fire broke out in the market due to a short circuit, which has spread to the uppermost shops. The cause of the accident is being investigated. Fire safety standards in the building will also be checked.
