Kanwar Yatra Put off In Uttar Pradesh

Lucknow, July 17 (TNA) For the second year in a row, there will be no Kanwar Yatra this year too in Uttar Pradesh. Neighbouring Uttarakhand has already put off the Yatra owing to the Covid pandemic.

The decision to cancel the annual and much participated Yatra was taken after the Supreme Court asked the state government to rethink its decision to go ahead with the Yatra, which draws thousands from across the country.

The apex court had given the Yogi Adityanath government time till Monday to reconsider its decision to go ahead with the religious event. The Supreme Court had said it was giving the state "one more opportunity to reconsider" or else, it would pass orders on its own.

A spokesman of the UP government said late Saturday night that on the request of the UP government, Kanwar associations have decided to cancel Kanwar Yatra in the state.
