Kanpur Commissioner Begins ‘Fire Fighting’ As Kanpur Faces Acute Water Shortage

Kanpur, May 18 (TNA) With many parts of Kanpur going parched due to scare water supply, the administration swung into action on Wednesday to address the issue. Commissioner Kanpur Raj Shekhar along with GM Jal Kal; Neeraj Gaur, GM Jal Nigam SK Sharma and project director of Metro Arvind Singh visited the problem sites at Parade Chauraha and also the work site at the Ganga Barrage.

Total Drinking water requirements of the Kanpur city is 517 MLD of which Bena Jhawar Pumping station of Jal Kal meets 215 MLD, Ram Manohar Lohia Pumping station, Ganga Barrage of Jal Kal serves 59 MLD,

Panaki Lower Ganga Canal pumping station of jal kal provides for 28 MLD, Lower Ganga canal Bena Jhewar pumping station of Irrigation Dept gives 50 MLD, Ganga Barrage pumping station of Jal Nigam 400 MLD and 168 boring wells of Jal kal provide for 140 MLD water to the city.

However, the water supply at the Ganga Barrage is falling short and creating problems. The Dismantling and laying of new main water supply pipeline by Metro construction at Parade chauraha and the repair, pipe laying work by Jal Nigam at Ganga Barrage have created water problems in nearly 7 to 8 wards in last 3 days.

The Jal nigam pumping stations at Ganga Barrage are of 400 MLD capacity. but as on date only 50 MLD is being supplied from this. It’s only 25% of the total capacity. The rest rest 350 MLD capacity is unutilised because of no water supply pipeline, damaged water supply pipeline in many areas. This issue is not being resolved since last many years.

Now a new proposal for this has been sent to Jal Nigam HQ by GM Jal Nigam kanpur after getting it vetted from IIT Kanpur for a feasible solution. Commissioner after inspection of the ongoing works of new pipe laying by Metro works, has directed to complete the work by Wednesday night to start the water supply by Thursday morning.
