Prayagraj, July 12 (TNA) In a move that would go a long way in prison reforms in Uttar Pradesh, house to the largest prisoner population in the country, jail inmates in the state will now be getting facilities for higher education.

The Rajarshi Tandon Open University in Uttar Pradesh, Prayagraj has taken an initiative to provide graduate and post graduate level higher education to the convicted prisoners lodged in the state prisons.

According to the official information, along with Bareilly Central Jail, the prisoners of Meerut, Fatehpur, Ayodhya, Agra, Gorakhpur, Ghaziabad, Gautam Budh Nagar, Azamgarh, Jhansi, Fatehgarh, Varanasi and Bareilly District and Naini Central Jails will be allowed to appear in the graduation and post graduation level examination. will get a chance.

The first examinations of about 40 convicted prisoners of the state's Naini jail will be held in August this year at the graduation and masters level.

No fee will be charged from any prisoner for this. So far, many prisoners have registered from both the jails. The admission process has started which will continue till September. There will also be a system of online classes for the prisoners in the jail itself.

Regional Coordinator of Uttar Pradesh Rajarshi Tandon Open University, Prayagraj, Dr. RB Singh said that till now the prisoners who are serving sentences used to get a chance to study up to high school and intermediate while staying in jail.

For this, the examination center was determined in the jail itself and the examination was conducted according to the rules, but now after 12th from the Rajarshi Tandon Open University, for graduates and masters (BA, B.Com, BSc, MA, M.Com, and M.Sc). Apart from this, a chance will be given to do other professional diploma courses.

Singh said that along with studies, the prisoners in the jail will also be taught moral lessons. To get out of the world of crime, counselling of prisoners will be done from time to time through many big professors and experts of the country.

He said that study centers have been opened in both the jails of Bareilly and according to the new education policy, facilities are being provided for higher education in the jails.

There are also convicted prisoners in the jail who have not even studied high school. They do errands like weaving carpets, shoes, carpets, cloth and furniture etc. inside the jail.

Such convicted prisoners will be given training and diploma from the qualified designers, experts, engineers on behalf of UP Rajarshi Tandon Open University, Prayagraj.
