LUCKNOW || Rape accused former Uttar Pradesh minister Gayatri Prajapati got bail from the Lucknow bench of the Allahabad High Court (HC) on Friday. The powerful Samajwadi Party (SP) minister has been in prison since 2017. He had applied for bail owing to the ongoing Coronavirus pandemic, from the KGMU, where he is admitted.

His lawyers told the court that the ward where the former mining minister was admitted at the KGMU was not far from the COVID19 ward and that he feared of contracting the infection of the dreaded virus.

The medical university in its report too had endorsed the fears that the chances of infection were higher in the vicinity of the COVId19 ward.

Prajapati has been in jail since July 18, 2017 when a special Pocso court had fixed charges on him and seven others under sections 376 D, 354 A (1), 509, 504 and 506 of the Indian Penal Code (IPC). They were also charged under section 5 G/6 pf the Pocso Act. He has been languishing in a private ward at the KGMU for the past nine months.
