Alarm Bells Ring As 36 More Prisoners Test HIV + In Lucknow District Jail

Lucknow, February 4 (TNA) Prison and health authorities in Uttar Pradesh have gone in a tailspin following the confirmation of an increased number of HIV prisoners in the Lucknow district jail. According to the information available, the health department conducted the HIV screening of all 3000 prison inmates in December 2023. The number of prisoners who tested positive has come to 36.

What has sent alarm bells ringing in the administration is the fact that the number of HIV+ prisoners earlier was just 11. The number of AIDS-affected prisoners in the Lucknow district jail thus now stands at 47. ART centre of the KGMU has started providing medicines to these prisoners. A probe has been launched to look into the possible reasons behind this sudden and worrying spurt.
