Madhuri the Elephant: A Timeline of Relocation, Protests, and Plans for Rehabilitation

2 min read

Kolhapur, August 6 (TNA) Madhuri, the revered 36-year-old elephant who spent over 33 years at Kolhapur’s Nandani Jain Math, was relocated in late July 2025 to Vantara, a premier animal rescue and rehabilitation centre in Jamnagar, Gujarat.

The move followed a Bombay High Court order demanding her rehabilitation due to worsening health caused by years of neglect and mistreatment, a decision upheld by the Supreme Court.

Despite the legal backing and expert support given to Madhuri at Vantara—where she is receiving advanced veterinary care for chronic foot ailments and arthritis—the relocation ignited widespread protests in Kolhapur. Thousands participated in silent marches, expressing grief and outrage over the removal of what many consider a sacred community member.

The proposed rehabilitation centre in Kolhapur offers hope for a future where sacred traditions and modern ethics coexist for the well-being of this majestic elephant.

In the wake of the public outcry, Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis announced plans to join the Jain Math in filing a review petition with the Supreme Court to expedite Madhuri’s return to Kolhapur. Vantara has pledged full cooperation with the government and the Math, offering technical and veterinary support for a safe repatriation, subject to judicial approval.

Moreover, Vantara has proposed to establish a satellite rehabilitation centre in Kolhapur itself, designed with modern facilities such as hydrotherapy pools, laser therapy rooms, and open habitat areas to promote Madhuri’s physical and psychological healing. The plan will involve close consultation with religious authorities and government officials, aiming to honour Madhuri’s cultural significance while prioritising her welfare.

The Madhuri case epitomises the challenging balance between tradition and animal welfare. The coming weeks are expected to bring clarity as the Supreme Court considers the review petition, while Madhuri’s recovery at Vantara continues under expert care.
