Role Of Women In Wildlife Conservation Discussed

Aligarh, May 15 (TNA) A renowned naturalist Dr Asad Rafi Rahmani (Former-Chairman Dept of Wildlife Sciences AMU and Former-Director Bombay Natural History Society), highlighted the role of women in wildlife conservation and shared stories of conservation initiatives taken by the women in India.

While speaking at the invited lecture organised by the Department of Wildlife Sciences, AMU; he stressed that women have the desire and knowledge to participate in conservation decision-making but are currently marginalized from community conservation practice. We argue that including women in research and action is key for successful community-based wildlife conservation.

Given an opportunity Jamal Ara of Bihar was the first female ornithologist in India who contributed more than 50 scientific papers on birds, Dr Rahmani added. While motivating the students to seriously pursue studies and contribute to solving the wildlife conservation problem in India, he said that even after his retirement, he is actively engaged in conservation activities specially making efforts to save endangered great Indian bustard, lesser florican and several species of storks and cranes.

Prof Afifullah Khan (Chairman, Department of Wildlife Sciences) introduced the guest speaker to the students and researchers. He said Dr Rahmani possesses an illustrious career of more than forty years working on wildlife conservation in India. Apart from students and researchers, Dr Sharad Kumar, Dr Kaleem Ahmed, Dr Ahmed Masood and Dr Satish Kumar faculty members were present. Dr Orus Ilyas proposed the vote of thanks.
