VHP Calls For Bandh On Monday To Protest Violence During Durga Puja Idol Immersion In Cuttack
Cuttack, October 5 (TNA) Violence erupted in Cuttack during Durga Puja idol immersion near Haathi Pokhari in Daraghabazar. The clashes started after objections were raised against high-decibel music played during the immersion procession, leading to stone-pelting from rooftops.
Several people were injured, including Cuttack’s Deputy Commissioner of Police Khilari Rishikesh Dnyandeo. Police resorted to a mild lathi charge to control the unrest, and immersion activities were temporarily halted for nearly three hours. Six people have been arrested so far, with investigations ongoing using CCTV footage and drone visuals.
The Vishwa Hindu Parishad (VHP) blamed administrative lapses and demanded the transfer of the DCP and district collector, calling for a 12-hour bandh in Cuttack on Monday as a protest.
The Odisha government imposed internet and social media bans in sensitive areas to prevent misinformation and further escalation. Chief Minister Mohan Charan Majhi condemned the violence, assured strict action, and directed free medical aid for the injured.
Additional police forces and prohibitory orders remain in place to maintain law and order as the city stays tense following fresh violent incidents linked to a VHP motorcycle rally in defiance of administration orders.
