Dehradun, April 24 (TNA) A devastating bus accident struck Uttarakhand’s Tehri district on Thursday, when a passenger vehicle carrying 18 people from various states veered off a treacherous hilly road and plunged into a 70-meter-deep gorge, claiming five lives and leaving 13 others injured.

Eyewitnesses reported the bus skidding uncontrollably amid the challenging mountain terrain, a stark reminder of the perils faced by travellers on these narrow paths. The State Disaster Response Force (SDRF) responded swiftly, deploying five teams from nearby bases like Dhalwala and Koti Colony to the remote site for a gruelling rescue operation that extracted all survivors and rushed them to local hospitals for urgent care.

Local authorities have issued urgent safety advisories to drivers navigating Uttarakhand’s winding routes, especially during unpredictable weather, emphasising the need for caution to prevent such recurrent mishaps.

This tragedy echoes previous incidents in Tehri, where overloading and poor road conditions have repeatedly led to loss of life, underscoring the call for stricter enforcement of safety norms in the hill state. Rescue teams continue monitoring the area to ensure no victims remain trapped, as investigations into the exact cause are underway.
