Face Of The Chipko Movement, Legendary Environmentalist Sunderlal Bahuguna Passes Away

Dehradun, May 21 (TNA) Legendary environmentalist Sunderlal Bahuguna passed on Friday. The Chipko movement, which was undertaken by him to protect the Himalayan flora and fauna, made him an international figure, widely respected by environmentalists world over. He was 94 and had been under treatment for COVID.

He worked extensively for man-nature harmony. Uttarakhand chief minister Tirath Singh Rawat has condoled the demise of the environmentalist and prayed for peace to the departed soul. The Chipko movement or Chipko Andolan, was a forest conservation movement in India.

It began in 1973 in Uttarakhand, then a part of Uttar Pradesh and went on to become a rallying point for many future environmental movements all over the world. It created a precedent for starting nonviolent protest in India.
