Cyclone Montha Intensifies: Andhra, Odisha On High Alert As 50,000 Evacuated Ahead Of Tuesday Landfall
Hyderabad, October 27 (TNA) Cyclone Montha continues to approach India’s east coast and is strengthening in the Bay of Bengal, with landfall expected on the evening of October 28 between Machilipatnam and Kakinada in Andhra Pradesh.
The India Meteorological Department has upgraded its advisories, classifying Montha as a severe cyclonic storm for Tuesday and warning of powerful winds up to 110 km/h and intense rainfall across Andhra Pradesh, Odisha, and parts of Tamil Nadu.
Authorities have moved more than 50,000 people to relief camps, closed schools and colleges in high-risk districts, and deployed disaster management teams. Fishing activities have been halted, and both the Army and NDRF are on standby for potential rescue and relief operations.
Red alerts are in effect for coastal districts, advising residents not to travel and to follow official guidance. Meteorologists expect the cyclone to weaken gradually once it moves inland, but flooding risks remain high for several days.
People in eastern and southeastern coastal regions have been urged by government authorities to monitor IMD alerts and stay prepared for adverse conditions in the coming 48 hours.
