BJP Stalwart Vijay Kumar Malhotra Passes Away at 93, Was First President Of Delhi Unit
New Delhi, September 30 (TNA) Veteran Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) leader and prominent Delhi politician Vijay Kumar Malhotra passed away on Tuesday morning, at the age of 93. He was undergoing treatment at AIIMS, New Delhi. Malhotra’s long and dedicated service to public life, spanning over five decades, made him one of the most respected figures in the capital’s political landscape.
Born on December 3, 1931, in Lahore, Vijay Kumar Malhotra moved to Delhi after Partition and began his political career with the Bharatiya Jana Sangh. He rose to become the first President of Delhi BJP and was pivotal in expanding the party’s base in the city.
A five-time Member of Parliament and two-time MLA from Delhi, he played vital roles both as Leader of Opposition in the Delhi Legislative Assembly and as a parliamentarian.
Malhotra was widely known for his simplicity, integrity, and relentless commitment to public service. He was the only BJP candidate to win in Delhi during the 2004 Lok Sabha elections—a testament to his deep grassroots connect.
His most notable victory came in the 1999 Lok Sabha polls, where he defeated former Prime Minister Manmohan Singh by a large margin. Malhotra was also a sports administrator and served as President of the Delhi Pradesh Jana Sangh (1972–75), and twice as President of BJP Delhi Pradesh (1977–80, 1980–84).
