Bhandara, September 11 (TNA) At least eight people were killed on the spot when a goods truck collided with a pickup van (Trax) on the Nagpur–Raipur national highway in Maharashtra’s Bhandara district early on Friday, police said.
The accident took place around 3 am near Pimpalgaon road, close to Bhau’s dhaba in the Lakni–Sakoli area, when the speeding truck hit the van from behind, officials said. The impact was so severe that the van got completely embedded in the truck, and two JCB machines had to be used to extricate the mangled vehicle, police added.
Initial reports said all eight victims were labourers from Chhattisgarh who were returning after work, and that the dead included five women and three children. Three others were reported injured and shifted to nearby hospitals for treatment, with some in serious condition.
Police reached the spot after receiving information and began rescue and investigation work. The exact cause of the crash is yet to be ascertained, but high speed and possible fatigue are being looked into.
