Kathmandu, August 28 (TNA) Nepal is still dealing with severe disruption after the flash floods, with rescue work continuing, roads and bridges damaged, and officials warning of more landslide and flood risks in the affected Himalayan border region. The death toll has been reported at more than 150 in Nepal, while hundreds remain missing, including foreign tourists and workers.
The floods hit the Nepal–Tibet border area after a wall of mud, rock, and water collapsed into a mountain river, sweeping away villages, bridges, and project sites. Reuters reported that more than 1,000 people remained missing across Nepal and neighbouring China, with rescue teams searching debris-strewn valleys and hillsides. Authorities also warned residents in several districts to stay away from the banks of the Bhotekoshi, Trishuli, and Narayani rivers because of continuing danger.
Nepali Army and police teams have led rescue operations, using helicopters to airlift injured people and stranded survivors from the flood zone. Officials said they have set up temporary medical support in the area, while moving the seriously injured to Kathmandu for treatment. The government has also been tracking missing persons, including a large number of foreign nationals, as search operations continue.
The floods have damaged roads, bridges, and power projects, cutting off access in parts of the affected region. Reports also said unstable debris and blocked river channels are raising the risk of secondary flooding or landslides if heavy rain continues. Because the disaster struck a border area with tourist and infrastructure sites, the economic and transport impact is likely to remain serious in the coming days.
Different outlets have reported varying totals as the situation develops, but all point to a major disaster with very high casualties and many missing people. Nepalese authorities reported at least 157 bodies recovered at one point, while later updates placed the death toll higher, and the Nepal Tourist Board said more than 400 people were missing, including many foreigners. The scale of the missing list is one of the biggest concerns because it includes tourists, workers, and residents spread across the border zone.
