Madrid, October 28 (TNA) At least 46 people were killed after two high-speed trains collided in Spain’s central Toledo province on Wednesday morning, authorities said. Officials warned that the death toll could rise as rescue and assessment operations continued.

The crash occurred near the towns of Los Yébenes and Urda, south of Madrid, shortly after 9 a.m. local time. Preliminary reports said the accident involved a Renfe AVE train and an Iryo service operating on the Madrid–Andalusia route.

Rear-End Collision

Spain’s rail infrastructure operator ADIF said traffic on the Madrid–Andalusia high-speed rail line was suspended following a rear-end collision between two trains. According to preliminary information reported by Spanish media, one train struck the rear of another that had stopped, causing two carriages to derail and fall down an embankment. Several passengers were also reported injured.

Rail Services Suspended

Emergency services reached the crash site and began rescue operations. The collision disrupted rail services linking Madrid with Ciudad Real and the southern Andalusia region. Authorities were working to determine the exact circumstances of the collision, including why one of the trains was stationary on the track. The identities of those killed and the total number of injured had not been officially released at the time of reporting.

Officials said the investigation would begin once rescue operations and the recovery of the affected carriages were completed. Further details are expected as authorities assess the full impact of the disaster.
