New Delhi, October 10 (TNA) India’s Putul Sonowal has created history by assuring the country's first-ever medal at the World Bowls Champion of Champions in Barham, Australia. The 43-year-old from Assam achieved the milestone by reaching the semi-finals of the men’s singles event. Sonowal defeated Singapore’s Harriman Yuen in the quarter-finals to reach the final four.

A member of the Assam Police, Sonowal has emerged as one of India’s leading lawn bowls players. He won the Men’s Singles gold medal at the 2026 Asian Lawn Bowls Championship, further strengthening his standing on the international stage.

Earlier, at the 2026 Commonwealth Games in Glasgow, Sonowal defeated Canada’s Ryan Bester, a three-time Commonwealth Games medallist and former world outdoor champion, in the Men’s Singles event. The match went to a tie-break after both players won one set each, with Sonowal emerging victorious.
