New Delhi, September 15 (TNA) India has taken a major step towards bringing Formula 1 back to the country, with the government announcing a 10-member task force to assess the feasibility of hosting a Grand Prix in 2028.
Union Sports Minister Mansukh Mandaviya announced the task force, which will examine the challenges involved in reviving Formula 1 and developing India’s wider motorsport ecosystem. The panel will be chaired by Yugal Kishore Joshi, a programme director at NITI Aayog.
Policy and Infrastructure Review
The task force will study taxation, regulations, infrastructure and other policy issues that could affect the return of Formula 1. It will also examine the economic, tourism and investment benefits of staging major international motorsport events in India.
Representatives from the Sports Ministry, NITI Aayog, the Federation of Motor Sports Clubs of India, and the governments of Uttar Pradesh and Maharashtra are expected to be part of the panel.
Buddh Circuit in Focus
The government is exploring the possibility of bringing the race back to the Buddh International Circuit in Greater Noida, Uttar Pradesh. The venue hosted India’s Formula 1 races from 2011 to 2013 before the event was removed from the calendar because of tax, regulatory and financial challenges.
Mandaviya said the government’s objective is to create a suitable framework by next year and work towards hosting a Formula 1 race in India in 2028. The proposed return would come more than a decade after India last hosted a Grand Prix.
