Chitrakoot, September 3 (TNA) Three members of a family, including a father and his two young children, were killed when a mud wall of their house collapsed in Chitrakoot district early on Thursday, as heavy monsoon rains continued to batter Uttar Pradesh and swell rivers in the region.
The victims were identified as Kallu Yadav, 32, his five-year-old son Ansh and one-year-old daughter Kalli, who died on the spot after being trapped under the debris in Barach (also reported as Baraich) village under Karvi/Sadar tehsil, police said. Kallu’s wife Kunta Devi, 30, and their four-year-old daughter Anshika were seriously injured and admitted to the district hospital, where they are undergoing treatment.
According to police and local reports, the family lived in a kutcha (mud) house at the foothills of a small hillock. Continuous overnight rain weakened the structure, and in the early hours of Thursday the rear wall suddenly gave way while the family was asleep. Neighbours rushed to the spot after hearing cries and, with help from villagers, dug out the trapped members from under the rubble. By then, Kallu and the two children had succumbed to their injuries.
Upon receiving information, local police and administration teams, including SDM Ajay Kumar, reached the village, inspected the site and arranged for the injured to be shifted to the district hospital. The bodies of the deceased were sent for post-mortem, and further legal formalities are underway.
Officials said the family will be provided ex-gratia assistance under disaster relief norms. A mood of grief prevailed in the village as news of the deaths spread. The incident comes as Chitrakoot and adjoining areas in Uttar Pradesh and Madhya Pradesh have been hit by intense rainfall over the past 24 hours. The Mandakini river, which flows through the pilgrimage town, has been running several metres above the danger mark, submerging low-lying areas, ghats and some shops near Ramghat.
Authorities have been evacuating people from vulnerable spots and shifting them to safer locations, while SDRF and other teams remain on standby. Across Uttar Pradesh, rain-related incidents, including house and wall collapses, have already claimed multiple lives in recent days.
