Lucknow, August 25 (TNA) The Uttar Pradesh government has approved a free lifetime bus travel scheme for women aged 60 years and above, offering a major welfare benefit to senior women across the state ahead of Raksha Bandhan. Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath is set to launch the scheme on Wednesday, August 26, at a function in Lucknow.
Under the newly approved scheme, women aged 60 and above will be able to travel free of cost on all buses operated by the Uttar Pradesh State Road Transport Corporation (UPSRTC) for life. The benefit is expected to cover more than one crore women, making it one of the state’s largest targeted welfare measures for senior citizens.
Officials said beneficiaries will be able to avail the facility by showing valid identification such as a voter ID card or Aadhaar card while travelling. The government has positioned the move as a gift for women ahead of Raksha Bandhan, highlighting its focus on women’s mobility and social support.
The scheme was cleared in the state cabinet along with 23 other proposals, and will be implemented through the transport department. It is also seen as the fulfilment of a promise made in the BJP’s 2022 assembly election manifesto.
